SR4 - Wagon Trail Realignment Project Is Complete!

November 2025 Update

The Wagon Trail Realignment Project is now complete. Thank you for your patience and cooperation during construction of this important project!

Project Highlights 

Improvements completed as part of this project included:

  • Widening, grading and paving Highway 4 between Appaloosa and Bonanza Mine Road

  • Realignment of SR-4 to remove dangerous curves

  • Installation of new culverts, retaining walls, and other drainage and grading features

  • Improvement of overall road safety for the traveling public

In coordination with Caltrans and Calaveras Council of Governments (CCOG), the County of Calaveras Department of Public Works (County) served as the lead agency on this project.

Funding

At the beginning of Phase I construction, the design engineer’s project cost estimate was $27 million. After necessary archeological preservation work, the project is now expected to cost $53 million. Project funding sources include Local, State, and Federal sources, including: State Highway Operation and Protection Program (SHOPP) funds, State Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) Regional Improvement Program, SB1 Local Partnership Program (LPP) funds and County Road Impact Mitigation (RIM) funds. The County and Calaveras Council of Government are currently working to secure funding for Phase 2 of the Project, which extends from Cherokee Creek Bridge to Stockton Road near Angels Camp.
